Music vs. Massage Therapy in Labor

  1. This post reminds me of a video I watched a few years ago, where a woman chose to give birth in a birthing pool. It appears this option of birthing helps to control the pain levels women experience during labor and delivery. The intensity of pain exhibited by the woman in the video did not seem to exceed its threshold, however some discomfort was certainly present. But who am I to know what this woman was really feeling because some people hide pain very well. Certainly, it gives me great pleasure to know that women have a variety of birth options available. In spite of the research being very limited, water birthing is still gaining popularity around the globe. In this particular study, a survey was used to make an assessment of any positive or negative maternal childbirth experiences with both conventional birthing and water birthing. The childbirth experience questionnaire (CEQ) inferred that more water births correlated to a positive motherly birthing experience. A major concern with water birthing is the safety issue. More studies need to be completed to address any and all safety concerns. Many believe hydrotherapy is safe during the first stage of labor but not the second stage. As with all things, there are both benefits and risks that need to be taken into consideration. Overall, the woman in the video makes me a believer. On her second push the baby was in the doctor's hands, and she was shocked that it occurred so fast and without the intensity of pain she expected.
